Janine Barelds

International Psychosynthesis Therapist | Counsellors | Nurse

I was born, grew up and was largely educated in the Netherlands. I have travelled and lived in many interesting places worldwide where I have worked with individuals, couples and families from range of cultural groups. My experience as a development worker as an Australian Volunteers Abroad in the Solomon Islands was a big learning curve and an honour to have worked with the traditional people.

On a personal note, I am married to Albert and I have 3 daughters and 2 grandsons.

My heart activity is bushwalking and singing in a multi-faith choir and we perform regularly in age care facilities. I have a keen interest in food, cooking and gardening at our home in the Adelaide Hills. My daily walks in Cleland Conservation Park give me regular encounters with koalas, kangaroos and birds. I have an ongoing interest and intrigue with spiritual matters and chanting and meditation is my way of recharging the batteries.

My qualifications

Nursing –  South Australian registered general nurse and accredited mental health nurse.  AAP Credentialed member of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.  Registered member of the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency and staff member of the Royal District Nursing Service.

Bioenergetics – apprenticeship in Bioenergetics,  which involves working with the body’s energy and releasing blockages.

Psychotherapy – graduate from the International College of Psychosynthesis (a transpersonal type of psychology)  and Gestalt in the Netherlands.

Cutting the ties that bind – I have undertaken specialist training and worked with the American therapist Phyllis Krystal who developed the method.  Member of the Association for the Advancement of Psychosynthesis International.

Specialist training in Grief and Loss and Palliative Care. Australian Centre of Grief and Bereavement courses.

My experience

I was the co-founder of the Psychosynthesis Centre for Australasia in Adelaide and a teacher in the three years Diploma Course in Psychosynthesis.

At Adelaide University I lectured in the use Psychosynthesis in grief and palliative care counselling.

Commencing private practice in 1990, I worked overseas, also in South Australian country areas and since 1996 I have practised in Adelaide.

For the past 30 years, I have had a keen interest in primary health care and education. I worked in a National Women’s Health program, had memberships of community boards and undertake voluntary work.

In the last 15 years, palliative care nursing, age care education and private psychotherapy practice have been my passion.
