A New Public Health Challenge

As the world moves past the immediate threat of COVID-19, long COVID is emerging as a new public health challenge. In The Court of Public Opinion, Professor Quentin Grafton warns that long COVID could become Australia’s next major health crisis if not addressed properly.

Long COVID: The Growing Threat

Long COVID affects an estimated 170,000 to 300,000 Australians. Many of whom are of working age. Professor Grafton explains that this growing number could overwhelm the healthcare system and lead to significant economic and social consequences.

What Needs to Be Done

To prevent long COVID from becoming a full-blown crisis, Professor Grafton suggests several public health measures. These include increased access to booster shots, better indoor air quality, and continued vigilance in healthcare settings.

More about Professor Quentin Grafton

R. Quentin Grafton, FASSA, is a distinguished Professor of Economics, as well as an Australian Laureate Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU). Additionally, he is the Convenor of the Water Justice Hub and serves as the Director of the Centre for Water Economics, Environment and Policy (CWEEP) at the Crawford School of Public Policy. In April 2010, he was appointed Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair in Water Economics and Transboundary Water Governance. Between August 2013 and July 2014, he also took on the role of Executive Director at the Australian National Institute of Public Policy (ANIPP). Currently, he holds the position of Director for the Food, Energy, Environment and Water Network while continuing as the Convenor of the Water Justice Hub.
