Awer Mabil: Young Australian of the Year 2023

South Australia’s (and Auscast Network’s) own Awer Mabil has been named the Young Australian of the Year 2023 for his exceptional work as a professional soccer player and his efforts to make a difference in the lives of refugees.

Born in a Kenyan refugee camp, Awer and his family fled civil war in Sudan before settling in Australia when he was just 10 years old. Despite facing many challenges, Awer has never let his circumstances define him. Instead, he has used his experiences to drive him to make a positive impact on the world.

Awer’s journey to success is a testament to his resilience and determination. After reaching his dream of playing for the Socceroos, he faced another tough time when his sister passed away in a car accident in 2019. However, Awer has used these difficult moments as motivation to keep pushing forward and make a difference.

As the co-founder of the not-for-profit organisation Barefoot to Boots, Awer is dedicated to improving the health, education, policies, and gender equality for refugees. Through his work, Awer is making a tangible impact on the lives of those in need and is using his platform to raise awareness about the challenges that refugees face.

His unique way of celebrating a goal is a message to those struggling with their mental health. He wants to show that they are not alone and that they can speak up. Awer is a role model to young people and is determined to be known for what he does, not his background.

Awer Mabil is a true inspiration and a deserving recipient of the Young Australian of the Year 2023 award. His journey from a refugee camp to professional soccer player and his efforts to make a positive impact on the world are a testament to his strength and character.
