In a conversation on The Shawn Ryan Show, Berg provides an inside look at the series, discussing its themes, challenges, and how it redefines historical dramas. With a focus on survival and sacrifice, this gritty portrayal strips away the romanticism often associated with frontier life.

The Themes of Survival and Sacrifice

At [07:50], Berg explains, “This series strips away the romanticism of the frontier.” Unlike traditional Westerns that glorify the pioneer spirit, American Primeval delves into the brutal struggles settlers faced. “It’s about survival, pure and simple,” Berg shares.

The series highlights the raw emotions of a time when life and death were separated by a thin line. “Every decision, every conflict had immediate consequences,” he explains. By exploring the complexities of human nature under extreme conditions, the show captures the essence of what it meant to forge a new life in an unforgiving landscape.

Challenges of Filming in Harsh Conditions

To achieve authenticity, Berg and his team embraced the physical challenges of filming in harsh environments. “We filmed on a mountain to capture the brutal beauty of the era,” Berg recounts. At high altitudes, cast and crew endured freezing temperatures and unpredictable weather.

“We wanted viewers to feel the cold, to sense the danger,” Berg says, emphasising that the environment becomes a character in its own right. These conditions demanded resilience from the actors, who had to perform intense emotional and physical scenes in the unforgiving wilderness. “The hardship added a layer of realism you can’t replicate on a soundstage,” Berg explains.

Reimagining the Western Genre

Berg views American Primeval as an opportunity to redefine the Western genre. “It’s not about heroes or villains,” he says. “It’s about flawed people trying to survive.” By focusing on the complexities of morality and the stark realities of life on the frontier, Berg creates a story that resonates with modern audiences.

The series also explores themes of community and division, touching on the tensions between settlers, Native Americans, and the natural world. “We wanted to tell a balanced story, showing all sides of this tumultuous time,” Berg adds.
