The Cost of Division
In this episode of The Court of Public Opinion, Jeremy Cordeaux voices his frustration over the staggering $500 million spent on the recent voice referendum. According to Jeremy, the outcome was predictable and simply confirmed what Australians had already made clear—they do not want to be divided by race. “It cost us more than half a billion dollars to find out what we already knew,” Jeremy says, expressing his disbelief at the wasteful expenditure. He believes the money could have been better used to benefit all Australians, avoiding divisive politics.
Jeremy points out that the referendum has not only drained public funds but has also deepened societal divisions. “We are seeing people become more divided, not less, and that’s the opposite of what we should be aiming for,” he states. For Cordeaux, this expenditure and the resulting discord are a clear indication that the referendum has done more harm than good.

A Call for Common Sense
Jeremy strongly believes that the voice referendum results should serve as a wake-up call to the Australian government. He urges the government to focus on unity rather than policies that create division. “If the Liberals had a grain of common sense, they’d start getting rid of things that divide us,” Jeremy remarks. He points specifically to the presence of multiple flags representing different communities and cultural groups, which he feels only reinforces separation rather than fostering unity.
In his view, the government should take concrete steps to eliminate these symbols of division, thereby promoting a more unified national identity. “Why do we need all these extra flags when we already have one that represents all of us?” he asks. Jeremy’s call for the removal of additional flags is a reflection of his broader desire for a more cohesive Australian society, where citizens are united by common values rather than separated by race or culture.
SOMETHING EXTRA: We are being asked to trust the government on the details of the ‘voice’…really!
Reflecting on National Identity
As the focus moves to national identity, Jeremy stresses the importance of rallying around Australia’s shared symbols, particularly the flag. “We have only one flag. It’s a beautiful flag,” he says passionately. For Jeremy, the Australian flag should be a symbol of unity that all citizens, regardless of background, can rally around. Jeremy believes Australia can overcome divisions, worsened by the voice referendum, by focusing on shared values and identity.
